Steve Englehart Named 13th Head Football Coach at UWG

CARROLLTON, Ga. — The University of West Georgia has named Steve Englehart the 13th head football coach in program history, announced today by Director of Athletics Jason Carmichael.

A proven program builder with championship success across multiple levels of college football, Englehart comes to Carrollton following his most successful season as a head coach at Presbyterian College, culminating in his selection as the 2025 AFCA FCS National Coach of the Year.

"Steve Englehart is exactly the kind of leader we were looking for at this moment in UWG Football," Carmichael said. "He has built winning programs from the ground up, developed student-athletes on and off the field, and sustained success over a long coaching career. His vision, discipline, and experience align perfectly with where we are headed as a program and as a university."

Englehart brings 15 seasons over 17 years of head coaching experience to West Georgia, most recently leading Presbyterian College to a historic 10-win campaign in 2025. Over his career, he has compiled a 91–74 record, turning multiple programs into consistent winners.

Proven Program Builder
Englehart engineered a dramatic turnaround at Presbyterian, where the Blue Hose had not won more than four games in any of the seven seasons prior to his arrival. After two seasons of rebuilding, PC broke through with a 6–6 record in 2024, followed by a 10–2 campaign in 2025 — just the third 10-win season in the program's 113-year history.

In 2025, Presbyterian climbed as high as No. 16 in the national rankings, opened the season with eight consecutive victories, and earned a marquee road win at Mercer. Englehart was named Conference Coach of the Year, while 11 Blue Hose student-athletes earned All-Conference honors, a program record.

Balanced Excellence
Englehart's teams excelled on both sides of the ball in 2025. Offensively, Presbyterian led its conference and ranked 27th nationally in FCS total offense, averaging 416.8 yards per game, while finishing 16th nationally in scoring offense (34.4 points per game).

Defensively, the Blue Hose were among the nation's elite, ranking second in FCS in total defense (272.2 yards per game) and third in scoring defense (16.2 points per game).

The 2024 season also marked significant progress, as Presbyterian recorded its first four-game winning streak since 2007, finished 6–6, went undefeated in November for the first time in 22 years, and posted its highest win total in a decade.

A consistent recruiter and developer of talent, Englehart has coached at least one Freshman All-American in each of his four seasons at Presbyterian.

Extensive Head Coaching Experience
Prior to Presbyterian, Englehart served as the founding and only head coach in the history of Florida Tech Football, guiding the program from inception through its final season. Over seven seasons, he compiled a 44–35 record, led two teams to the NCAA Division II Playoffs, and earned two Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year awards.

Earlier in his career, Englehart was head coach at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where he became the youngest head coach in NCAA football at the time. He led the Fightin' Engineers to four consecutive winning seasons, an unprecedented run in program history.

Between head coaching roles, Englehart also served as offensive coordinator at Indiana State, where his unit ranked 14th nationally in scoring and set a school record with 351 points in a season.

Personal
A native of Terre Haute, Indiana, Englehart earned his degree in Health Education from Indiana State University in 2000. A former quarterback for the Sycamores, he was a three-time GTE Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Gateway Conference selection.

Englehart and his wife, Carrie, have three children: Ty, Caden, and Lila.
