Position Summary:

The Associate Vice President for Development leads a highly effective fundraising program for the University of Idaho.  The AVP works with the development team in partnership with Advancement leadership to develop an integrated, donor-centered Advancement program that provides quality engagement opportunities and builds investment in the university.  In this highly collaborative role, the AVP partners with college and unit leaders to achieve fundraising goals.  The AVP also hires, supervises, develops and advocates for the fundraising team. 

Job Duty Functions:

Provide leadership and direction to University of Idaho central and constituent development teams leading to increased levels of private support for university priorities by:  (70%, Essential)

  • developing and leading a comprehensive, donor-centered development program with a strategic plan to achieve annual fund raising goals;
  • hiring, supervising and mentoring central development directors and in concert with university deans and unit directors, constituency development directors
  • developing systems, structures, policies and procedures that provide focus and accountability within the development operation - examples include annual strategic plans, fundraising reports and analysis (working with Advancement Services), donor strategies and prospect assignment and management
  • working with the development team to build a donor pipeline that leads to a sustained level of philanthropic support;
  • advising and assisting key university and volunteer leaders in carrying out their responsibilities for major gift prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship;
  • advocating for constituency needs and ideas centrally and disseminating university needs and ideas de-centrally to ensure broad understanding and effective decision making while working to provide development officers with the resources, tools and information they need to achieve fundraising goals;
  • serving as portfolio manager for a select number of highly rated prospects

Assist the Vice President for University Advancement in development and execution of the strategic plan and future comprehensive campaigns by:  (20%, Essential)

  • leading the annual planning process, assuring coordination with university strategic plan, campaign efforts and other advancement unit plans;
  • working closely with other advancement units to integrate goals and coordinate efforts in support of fundraising initiatives (alumni; advancement services units; annual giving; corporate and foundation relations; estate, trust & gift planning; advancement communications and marketing; U of I Foundation and constituent programs);
  • working with deans and other unit leaders to identify and develop priority fundraising projects, including interdisciplinary opportunities;
  • serving on the principal gifts strategy team to help develop leadership gifts

Performing other duties as assigned by:  (10%, Marginal)

  • staying current on best practices by accessing information from, and participating in, advancement professional organizations, professional development activities and peer networking as appropriate;
  • performing other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10 years’ experience in fundraising, including demonstrated success in achieving fundraising goals and experience and success in planning, organizing and managing major fundraising programs and staff
  • 5 years’ supervisory experience with direct reports
  • Demonstrated track record of securing major gifts
  • Fundraising campaign experience
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting information and independently solving complex problems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a discipline related to the position responsibilities
  • Extensive experience in higher education fundraising and related university advancement areas
  • Experience developing fundraising materials including case statements, proposals, support materials, etc.
  • Public relations or marketing experience
  • Experience working in a complex university organization
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills 
  • Familiarity with database computer systems and applications, preferably with customer relationship management systems

Physical Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel and work odd hours and weekends
