Dean of the Darla Moore School of Business

Position Description

Founded in 1919, The Darla Moore School of Business has a history of innovative educational leadership, blending academic preparation with real-world experience through internships, consulting projects, study-abroad programs and entrepreneurial opportunities. The school is recognized as world-class for international business education and research, ranking as the No. 1 undergraduate program in international business for the last fourteen years and ranking among the Top 3 International Master of Business Administration programs for the last 21 years. The school offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees, as well as executive education and distance learning programs. In 1998, the School was named for South Carolina native and New York financier Darla Moore, making the University of South Carolina the first major university to name its business school after a woman. Current enrollment is approximately 4000 undergraduate students and 700 graduate students. There are approximately 80 tenure-track faculty members in seven academic departments.

THE POSITION: Reporting to the Provost, the Dean provides academic and administrative leadership to the Moore School of Business. The Dean is expected to lead the School in enhancing its mission of excellence in teaching, research, and service. The Dean is expected to: effectively articulate the mission and vision of the School to both external and internal constituencies; motivate these constituencies to achieve the mission and vision; and manage and develop the School's financial resources.

The successful candidate should:

  • Be a teacher and scholar of proven excellence, or have exceptional professional experience, with credentials suitable for appointment at the rank of a tenured full professor;
  • Have a commitment to academic excellence and innovation in graduate and undergraduate education;
  • Possess strong abilities to lead the continued development and implementation of a dynamic vision for the future direction of the School;
  • Have the experience and skills necessary to administer the affairs of the School and to interact effectively with other administrative officers in the University;
  • Have the broad intellectual perspective and strong administrative and decision making abilities that are required for effective leadership and management;
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and commitment to promoting faculty/staff/student collaboration and engagement;
  • Show commitment to cultural diversity and equal opportunity, and promote the internationalization of the student experience;
  • Possess a strong commitment to international business research and education;
  • Be able to serve as a key ambassador for the School with the business community and general public; and
  • Have the ability to engage in development activities intended to enhance the academic and financial strength of the School.

THE UNIVERSITY: The University of South Carolina's main campus is located in the state capital, close to the mountains and the coast. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has designated the University of South Carolina as one of only 73 public and 32 private academic institutions with "very high research activity" and also lists USC as having strong focus on community engagement. The University has over 29,500 students on the main campus (and over 44,500 students system-wide), more than 350 degree programs, and a nationally-ranked library system that includes one of the nation's largest public film archives. Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, is the center of a greater metropolitan area with a population over 750,000.
